I really, really want to build a snowman.

(Not necessarily like that one, though. Haha.)

I work with some complete spazz's.

Today the lights went off.. this woman JUMPS from her desk like a rocket and starts freaking out. "WHAT is GOING ON?! Is there a backup???" I tell her, "This happens almost every night, give it a second, they are usually on a motion sensor." She starts waving her arms around frantically, and after 5 seconds she starts running to find a manager. I'm staring at her in disbelief, when sure enough, 10 second later the lights come right back on. She walks back to her desk saying, "Whew, finally... I couldn't see ANYTHING!"

I should have used those 30 seconds to stab her in the leg. Ugh.

Steam is having a great sale right now on some excellent titles...
http://www.steamgamesales.com/

I just picked up World of Goo for a few bucks and it's a hoot. I'd like to play Mirror's Edge too ($4.99) but it requires shader model 3.0, and my now apparantly obsolete ATI x800xt only has SM 2.0. I'm definitely building a new rig this year.

Today I went to Walmart at 7 am to buy Zhu Zhus. I don't even have children, explain to me why I get up WAYYY too early to buy "the hottest toy of the season" ?

In other news, New Years Eve is quickly approaching and I have no plans as of yet. This sucks. I need to find something to do.

Books read thus far this year...
Snuff - Chuck Palahniuk
Coraline - Neil Gaiman
Wolves of Odin - Grant Gould (graphic novel)
Dark Tower: The Long Road Home - Stephen King, Peter David, Robin Furth, and Richard Isanove (graphic novel)
The Time Machine - H.G. Wells
The Island of Dr. Moreau - H.G. Wells
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (Blade Runner) - Phillip K. Dick
The Left Hand of Darkness - Ursula K. Le Guin
Coyote: A Novel of Interstellar Exploration - Allen Steele
Year's Best SF 10, 2005 - David Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer.
Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume 1 - Robert Silverburg
Flowers for Algernon - Daniel Keyes
Got Fight? - Forrest Griffin
The Graveyard Book - Neil Gaiman
Rant - Chuck Palahniuk
The Last Lecture - Randy Pausch
Neuromancer - William Gibson

I may have to put Johnny Mnemonic and the other two books of the Sprawl trilogy on my to-read list now, but I have too many books already queued up as it is.

My cat is an asshole and he knows it. I'm looking for a door for my theater room to keep his territorial butt out of it. I have a leather recliner ruined by his urine...since Chewie decided he liked to lie on it, Monkeybutt decided to piss on it. I'd strangle the little shit if I wasn't the only person in the world he actually liked.

I just had someone bring me their computer "per recommendation" and ask me to fix it. It should be easy money. He had someone "repair it" previously by installing the two ($50) software bundles that he brought along. Norton Bloatware and Webroot Spy Sweeper running on Vista...with 1 GiggleByte of RAM...and the malware is obviously not in check. I like to see just how exactly people make their systems so FUBAR, so I check out their browsing histories with a couple of tools. I left my usb-drive with those tools at home, so I decided to just open the browser. This is what I saw when I launched Internet Exploder.

It was acting squirrely as hell and bounced before I got a screenshot of the history. Pornhub was a likely culprit, but pop-ups had convoluted the history with the worst of the internet. And he had to have given the okey-dokey to at least half of those goddamn toolbars.

Laying in bed, I'm frantic. My head is fast, fast. I need Henry Rollins to get me through this one. If I were religious, I'd have the faith that God would get me through anything. But I'm not religious and don't believe in God. So how does an unreligious person just find the faith to believe you'll make it through somehow, some way?
And who do I ask my questions to, like "Why?". I do believe in signs and karma and I'm just a mess right now.
I can feel a tightening in my chest and if I were unmedicated I'd be in full blown anxiety attack. I may have one anyway.
Okay, don't worry. Don't panic.
I need to just curl up and read the Tao.
Even if I had a friend sitting next to me, I don't feel like talking. I feel like sleeping. It's 4:30am. Oh, it's 5am now. In the dark, it's quiet. The house is still. The baby sleeps. The TV hums. My chest rises, falls. Tightens. Rises, falls.

10:26 pm - I don't... feel famous
I came home from work today and turned on the radio to hear one of the department's professors on MPR talking about results from my experiment that were announced today in parallel talks at Fermilab and SLAC. Then they posted a story with some not-quite-justified claims, partly based on those quotes from professors not directly involved with the experiment. And now it's on the front page of The Guardian and The New York Times, for cryin' out loud. The criterion for "discovery" in particle physics is clear: less than a 1 in 1000 chance of the results being due to background, which would not have even been possible by just doubling our previous exposure, while remaining consistent with our previous null results. So I did not really convincingly discover dark matter today, though the world seems to think otherwise.

For a more subdued and cautious (realistic?) take on the situation, Symmetry and ScienceNews have very good articles.

MPR is now advertising the tiny little HEP seminar our local group's postdoc is giving tomorrow. I have no idea how we're going to fit everyone in that seminar room, even if no members of the public show up - and we've already been told reporters will be there. I guess people like being excited.

finally i have the internet at my new apartment. well not much is new aside from the fact that it is definitely winter now and it hit winnipeg like a ton of bricks. i like my new place, i'm living with my friend emily who i used to work with and we get along real well. like yesterday i got home from work and we just chilled out and talked for a few hours, it was awesome. i also live that much closer to the most delicious veggie burger in the world and some of my most beloved friends so that's also awesome.

i've been trying to be more creative lately but i've gotta get more organized. i'm thinking about walking down to the WAG office to sign up for a drawing class and right now i've got the money to do it, so all i need's a day off. i really want to get back into visual art like i was, i miss it. music's going alright and i can't ever complain. haunter's got a show on boxing day and shannon's going to sing with us, we're gonna cover oh yoko by john lennon and it'll kill everyone there.

also a few months ago i shaved my head. i guess that's worth mentioning.

that's it though.

At 24 years old, I feel like I should be past these kinds of mistakes.

Ooops.

Work has been insane and has totally screwed up my Six Word Story schedule. Oh well. Today I will update with some random stories.

One. While in the gym today, I opened a locker and saw a bunch of candy wrappers from the mints you get from Olive Garden. It made me laugh. Not only are people pigging out at Olive Garden for lunch and then hitting the gym, but they are rewarding themselves for going to the gym by snacking away on chocolate mint candies. Wayyy to keep those calories off people!

Two. We have a gym in our office building, which is pretty cool. Makes it really easy to work out, because you can go down there on your break or before or after work. The downside to this is when people think it's okay to work out in their work clothes. This huge woman sweating away in her work clothes. Not cool. I felt bad for the people who have to sit next to her when she went back to work.

Three. TBOX was fantastic. I felt like I met my first celebrity. While reading the bar crawl's website word for word, I saw a ton of pictures of the guy, Chris, who started it all. At the last bar of the night, the Chris dude walks right past me. I grabbed his arm and he looks at me like, "Who are you crazy girl, wearing an ugly sweater and reindeer antlers, who is holding onto my arm and staring at me with your mouth open and not saying anything?" I finally blurted out, "You started this whole thing! You're #1" And he just laughed and gave me a sticker and continued thru the crowd. I never thought I would be one of those dumb starstruck people, but I guess I was wrong. Oh well, go me and my dorkiness!

11:36 am - Star Wars in Concert - Indianapolis, Indiana December 12, 2009
This was an amazing experience. Even a non-enthusiast like my wife was really impressed. (Although the guy next to me was a member of the 501st, and during a conversation we had he noted that *his* wife was not at all supportive of his geekdom.) I really thought there would be more props around the concourse...maybe because I've seen so many at CII and CIII. Knowing Star Wars fans, I thought there would be more people in costume as well. The sound, performance, and visual display were simply awesome. The THX Deep Note, 20th Century Fox Fanfare, Main Title, Cantina Band, Luke and Leia, Duel of the Fates, and many others have never sounded better to me...the acoustics in the Indiana Pacer's basketball arena were surprisingly good. The diversity in visuals was impressive as well, and in the 2nd row we could really feel the heat from the pyros. I'm very grateful to my wife for the gift.

I took lots of photos! )

04:01 pm - A time of rejoicing...
For I have potstickers.

Both of my football teams officially suck now. I'd actually like to see them play one another to see which one sucks less. They share some key similarities. The heart and soul of their defenses are injured. Their offensive lines stinks...I don't know if Cutler or Worthlessberger would wind up on the ground more, but the game "drink for a sack" would be intoxicating. At least the Bears beat the Browns...Pittsburgh got ran over and last night was just ugly.

I just had my last class for the semester. Both finals are on Monday.

I read a pretty troubling article earlier about Obama's appointment of bankers from Citigroup and Goldman Sachs to key economic positions in the White House. This isn't the typical Limbaugh/Beck drivel and I'd love to hear a positive spin.

Now, for my workout.

Steam users! What is your username so that I may add you?

I played the first two campaigns of L4D2 yesterday after going home early due to my car-pool pal having an emergency...and subsequently had a LOT of fun after joining a random game with a couple of pretty cool players. I'd like to have more people I can count on to be of the nonfucktardial variety for L4D, L4D2, and other multiplayer games. While I get annoyed with people (vapid vapid facebook) stating the obvious about the terrible weather, I'm already getting cabin fever due to the motivationally inhibiting temperature. I'm lining up my entertainment for the winter with some games and books to occupy my time after finals are finished next week. I haven't read much at all this year due to the migraines and classes, and I have books from LAST Christmas that I haven't cracked. I think I'm going to read the last Harry Potta book before the film comes out, some Salvatore, King, and the Nietzsche book I started.

My Jeep needs some work, but I'm not inclined to freeze my ass off in my non-heated garage trying to figure out where the new rattling noise is coming from. It's a bummer since I was looking forward to playing with it in the snow, but maybe it's something superficial or easily fixed.

My wife's big Christmas gift to me this year are (2nd row) tickets to Star Wars in Concert in Indianapolis on Saturday. I'm really looking forward to it.

Finals on Monday, then time off from class. If I get B's in my classes I'll be thrilled. I really half-assed the work this semester.
